data as a commodity

Big Data is everywhere.  We set out to create a zine that explains and comments on the concept of data commoditization.  This chapter is part of teh larger zine: "Terms and Conditions".

A deep dive into the data commoditization process revealed its complexity.  No one really understands exactly how it works and little has been done to regulate it.

research

the evolution of a concept map

We synthesized our research into a concept map that explains the relationships between entities and data in the data commoditization process.

ideation

visual experimentation

We experimented with materiality and various representational techniques.  Our goal was to communicate the gritty, cryptic nature of data commoditization and the uneasy feelings we associate with it.

the publication

Data as a Commodity: Spread 1. Left Page: Your Consent Assumed. Right Page: Data as a commodity is when data is bought with the intenion of understanding trends or inflencing.a target demographic, often for monetary gain
Data as a Comodity: Spread 2. This imge is a concept map describing the relationsips between entities in the data commoditization sphere. People create crude data. An AI extracts, cleanses, and anonymize crude data. Through AI, crude data becomes refined data, which is grouped into profiles. Profiles are organized by data brokers and sold to third parties. Third parties can sell profiles to other third parties which target marketing back to people.
Data as a Commodity: Spread 3. A web where everything is free but we pay for it with our privacy.

iteration & other touchpoints

the mobile experience

The mobile experience utilizes concrete examples and animations to expand upon each step in the data commoditization concept map on Spread 2.
